= Welcome to the ROPP Portal ! =
'''The Ragnarok Online Preservation Project''' is the project which runs the Ragnarok Wiki. Our goal is relatively straightforward -- we're here to preserve ragnarok history and provide a central location for Ragnarok fans to get information about the past, present and future of Ragnarok Online. We look into old discoveries around Ragnarok Online and other Gravity games in the franchise, but we also look into the public domain efforts that have sprung up around those games -- times when ordinary people decided to get involved and run their own infrastructure and games.

We are a team of volunteers, who are dedicated to preserving content that otherwise would be lost to the sands of time. The degradation of information in general is happening at an alarming rate and we wanted to do our part to preserve a part of that by preserving Ragnarok Online. And what better way to preserve it and its mysteries, than to provide a single source of information for the community that plays it?

== How can I help? ==
<div class="alert alert-primary" role="alert"><b>Yay!</b> We have some vacancies for staff roles! [[ROPP: Staff vacancies|see here]]</div>
* '''Contribute to a game section -''' We are looking for knowledgable people to expand out content for Ragnarok Games. If you're knowledgeable on how to play, why not start a game guide?
* '''Hunt down Ragnarok's Past''' - Join us in the discord, help us look up fragments of RO's past hidden on archive.org and around the internet and help us!
* '''Uncover some mysteries''' - Were there player houses in Ragnarok Online? Was Dragon Zombie ever released? Is Jellopy an addictive substance?
* '''Expand the wiki''' - Add content for any game you like
* '''Preserve public domain history''' - Did you develop for an emulator? Ever make a tool to do something cool? Why not document it here? We preserve these things to help science!

== How can I join ? ==
You can join by becoming a member of the wiki and contribute that way. You can also join our discord server and speak to us and contribute that way. We of course recommend contributing to the wiki as that way information is preserved more effectively, however -- we're don't run the project with an iron fist -- if you want to contribute, just go ahead and contribute, and we'll work together to make the best content we can!

== How we're run ==
Currently because there isn't an influx of huge numbers of people, we are maintained in a semi-democratic structure run by the community itself. We publish the rules and policies we create and we're open to changing our policies if people feel the way we do things can be done better. For more info see these:

* [[ROPP: Policies]]

== Project goals ==
Current Goals are to expand the wiki to open it up to the public and reduce the amount of spam signups which are occurring.
This is because the wiki in a sense has become a victim of its own success -- as our rankings have become higher in Google, we have immediately been hit with Spam from various locations. Balancing this has been difficult with the small resources we have had, due to the fact that we don't want to blanket ban areas like Russia from visiting the site, but we also don't want to open up signup because then so much junk would end up getting posted which would take up most of our resources to remove to get rid of it.
At the moment MediaWiki doesn't have great plugins which can be used for this purpose, so we'd need to roll our own and share it with the MediaWiki community so they can use it too. We do have plugins we have used which have stemmed ''most'' of the spam when we did have signups open, which had custom rules to prevent new accounts from creating new pages but, spam adapted so we have to, too.
'''3D Monsters''' in Ragnarok Online were a series of monsters introduced by Gravity as a means of adding new features to Ragnarok Online. The monsters that are known of are [[Dragon Zombie (Ragnarok Online)|Dragon Zombie]] and [[Hugeling (Ragnarok Online)|Hugeling]] which have at various points, have had their attributes listed on Gravity sites or operators of Ragnarok Servers in other countries such as Brazil Ragnarok Online<ref>Ragnarok Online Brazil (2024) ''Database Oficial BETA - Home > Monstros > Hugeling''.

== Background ==
The original announcement for the 3D monsters was made in 2002's "Korea Amuse World Game Expo 2002", which detailed several new features for Ragnarok Online. According to Japanese game site "Game WATCH" reporter Seiji Nakamura, Gravity mentioned that they were working on Version 3.0 of Ragnarok Online's engine, [[GFC (Ragnarok Online)|GFC]]. Among the announcements for various features was for "full polygon monsters"<ref name=":0">Nakamura, S. (2002) ''ユーザーサービス満点のGravityブースレポート 「ラグナロクオンライン」2003年以降の予定を発表'', ''Game WATCH''. The intention of these monsters was to prove a challenge and require higher level characters in parties to band together in order to defeat them<ref name=":0" />, noting that they would be tested on the Sakray server in January of 2003<ref name=":0" />.

Nakamura also stated that at the time the Dragon Zombie was demonstrated, it was in a "debug mode" which caused it to deal only 1 damage.<ref name=":0" />

== Public-domain efforts ==
In 2012, several authors (Doss, Ricky92, Olrox, Ai4rei, curiosity, Lemongrass, Shinryo, Yommy and Greenbox) from the [[rAthena]] project undertook a sub-project to get the Granny3D Models (.gr2) models and 3D monsters to work correctly in the Ragnarok Client<ref name=":1">DoSS (2012). ''[Done!] Animated 3D Monsters in RO''. [online] rAthena. Available at: <nowiki>https://rathena.org/board/topic/68884-done-animated-3d-monsters-in-ro</nowiki> [Accessed 19 Nov. 2025]. Archived at https://archive.is/wip/LeVAl

</ref>. This began as people realised that on several Ragnarok-related hacking forums were able to bypass the granny2.dll, which is primarily used in the client for rendering the 3D monsters for the [[War of Emperium (Ragnarok Online)|War of Emperium]]. The authors contacted an author called Ricky92 from ElitePVPers who had written a conversion tool for Granny3D models, who began work on converting Granny3D models from a newer version to an older one which was supported by the Granny3D version in the Ragnarok Online client<ref name=":1" />.

The converter was eventually completed with the texture being converted to the earliest form of Bink compression, with a sample model of a pyramid being used in-game which worked. The project experimented with various different 3D files which had mixed success due to them being older or newer versions than those supported. Eventually the group succeeded in importing converted RO2 models into Ragnarok Online like the Spore monster, a fish and so on<ref name=":1" />:

<youtube>hYxL5aHgBuY</youtube>
<youtube>dqZUWQ1NvvY</youtube>

Eventually, the authors considered the project complete after they had finished editing the client to allow for more 3D monsters to be displayed, to increase the number of vertices allowed in the client and other changes. Eventually, the group published a tutorial on how to add the monsters to the Ragnarok Online client.

<youtube>gbMaPDtGJHE</youtube>

This project however, has gone some way to show how complete the 3D monsters were when they were imported into the game, showing that they had complete states where they could move with animations, attack with animations, die and be revived<ref name=":1" />. There are other references which state that 3D mobs were abandoned by Gravity due to complexities or that they did not integrate into the client well, particularly some saying they were abandoned due to the complexity of attacks in 2D with attacking monsters in 3D, however this seems not to be the case given what this project has been able to accomplish.

Further evidence of regular Ragnarok Online attacks working without issue or complexity was added in a response by a person named "Denmar John" who ran SpoonFeedRO, who tested the 3D monsters in their server with several classes attacking them at once, without any crashes or deleterious effects.
Available at: <nowiki>https://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20021214/gravity.htm</nowiki> (Accessed: 18 January 2024).</ref> .

== Public-domain efforts ==

There are other references which state that 3D mobs were abandoned by Gravity due to complexities or that they did not integrate into the client well, although this seems not to be the case given what this project has been able to accomplish.
'''Ragnarok Online 3''' is an upcoming game being released by Gravity Game Vision and created by Singapore-based company JoyMaker Games. Its official trailer was released on 31 July 2025 showing a modern reimagining of the original game.

It has received criticism since its launch due to its terms of service confirming that purchaseable in-game items were available, that the game would not be available in the European Union, and that refunds would not be available to users, as well as the TOS preventing the users from injunctive relief (legal recourse) against the JoyMaker games.<ref>Joymaker.com. </ref> Gravity and JoyMaker have since reversed course on excluding European players, however, the terms and conditions regarding paid content appear to be largely the same. <ref>Joymaker.com. == Features ==
Based on the RO3 gameplay trailer, the game is intended to be a pixel-for-pixel recreation of the original Ragnarok Online, although using modern game engines and higher-quality graphics<ref name=":0">Ragnarok Online 3 (2025). ''Ragnarok Online 3｜First Full Gameplay Trailer Released — A Tribute to Every True RO Fan''. Based on this trailer the game appears to have the following features:

* High-quality emoticons - Versions of the emoticons from the original Ragnarok Online game are shown.<ref name=":0" />
* Classic Vending System - The vending system of the original Ragnarok Online is present in the game, showing many vendors in Prontera and other locations with their shops bubbles open.<ref name=":0" />
* Skill System - Referred to as "job actions", but they appear to be skills like from the original game, showing various classes (Warlock, Asssassin Cross, etc) performing skills which appear to have different names but be variants of skills present in the original game.<ref name=":0" />
* 10-player dungeons - Not much information is provided beyond the title, however from the video it appears to be dungeons where groups of 10 players enter at once to clear it. The trailer shows large-scale monsters in the dungeons, similar to the large-scale 3-dimensional monsters which were planned in the original Ragnarok Online but were not implemented due to technical constraints.<ref name=":0" />
* Guild League - A battle feature in which guilds battle eachother directly in arenas to vy for victory and the top spot in the league.<ref name=":0" />
Gravity and Joymaker games have now reversed course on their excluding the good people of Europe, however, it seems like not much else in the terms and conditions have changed. Even thought the spirit of allowing people from Europe into the server is a welcome one, much of the terms of service still read like the previous one as far as I can see. And well, GDPR? Err..

It has to be stated pretty clearly that I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, and I am not qualified to give legal advice, nor do I have qualifications in law, so take what I say here as the certain observations of a layperson.

I am but a humble researcher here, but yet -- to a layperson like me, these terms and conditions do not seem to follow GDPR's principles of being minimalistic and so on. Particularly, there is a massive clause which says "your User Content to which you have contributed, for any purpose whatsoever, in any and all formats" and "in my non-legal opinion doesn't really seem to be in line with the GDPR on "adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed". Again though - what do I know.

This is just me "spitballing" as the Americans say, but in my opinion -- people outside of the EU should get the same protections as us within (or on the periphery) of it. And since I'm on the subject and speaking only for myself - if RO3 has any hope of being a long-term prospect, Gravity and JoyMaker should see the players as partners on a long journey, rather than cash cows to be milked for a year until the next hype cycle.
* [[0052.lzh (Server Emulator)]] - Predecessor to most of the RO emulators posted on [[EmuServer Of Ragnarok (EOR)]] BBS
* [[YARE (Server Emulator)]] - Based also on a mixture of 0052.lzh and Athena itself.
* [[Athena (Server Emulator)]] - Originally posted on EmuServer of Ragnarok, Japanese. The progenitor of a very large number of emulators.
* [[I-Athena (Server Emulator)]] - Athena rewrite/improvement project which was included in YARE and which was based off Athena and YARE code.
* [[Weiss (Server Emulator)]] - Based on 0052 and Athena.
* [[Apurodani (Server Emulator)]] - Short-lived emulator which was provided on EOR BBS based on code which predates 0052.lzh. Was largely superceded by 0052.lzh and development ceased very shortly thereafter.
* [[ROSE (Server Emulator)]] - Relatively obscure emulator which as based off the RO protocol but does not appear to be based off 0052.lzh.

== Athena derivatives ==

* [[AthenaX (Server Emulator)]] - A Japanese off-shoot of I-Athena (Athena) which was relatively short-lived.
* [[EAthena (Server Emulator)]] - English translation of Athena which was largely in Japanese.
* [[hAthena (Server Emulator)]] - Proof of concept emulator based off Athena with various additional features and scripts but never released.
* [[AthenaAdvanced (Server Emulator)]] - GUI-Based Athena derivative.
* [[OmniAthena (Server Emulator)]] - GUI/console-based Athena derivative based off eAthena/jAthena, founded by YARE developers.
* [[Project Odin (Server Emulator)]] - An Athena and YARE offshoot, started by OmniAthena developers
* [[Freya (Server Emulator)]] - Offshoot of eAthena/Athena focused on stability.

Halca:

<vote />
<!--start text-->
Posts have cropped up on Reddit pointing to Ragnarok Online 3's Terms of Service hinting perhaps at a taste of things to come. The Ragnarok 3 game trailer dropped recently, and here at ROPP/Ragnarok Wiki we were actually quite excited about the prospect of a new Ragnarok game. But, like with every other Ragnarok game released by Gravity lately, we were worried it would be an obvious Pay-To-Win because all of the recent games have been pay-to-win and usually last for around a year before collapsing under the weight of their contradictions.

JoyMaker is a mobile app developer currently with 2 games in the Google Play store, one of which appears to be ad-supported and the other which is a free-to-play bottle-filling game. The company, which is creating the Ragnarok Online 3 game, posted the terms and conditions for Ragnarok 3, and well - we're disappointed, but we're not surprised to see that they are full of anti-gamer clauses and more or less confirm the existence of pay-to-win (since in my opinion saleable items in general are pay-to-win and usually offer a paid advantage by definition), in the opinion of this opinionated RO lover.

There is a possibility that of course, these items for purchase will be cosmetic in nature, and will not offer any specific in-game buffs, but judging from previous outings of Ragnarok IPs, it seems unlikely. For the sake of balance, we have to interject that this is possible and will certainly correct this information if Gravity or JoyMaker state clearly if purchased items will include buffs or in-game advantages when purchased.

The Terms and Conditions (referenced below) mentions Europe no less than 10 times, repeatedly stating that European users are not permitted to use the service, and it's obvious why - because Europe has much stronger protections of its citizens than in the countries Ragnarok Online 3 is being launched in. Not only that but the terms and conditions confirm clearly that there likely will be in-game currencies of some form or another (section 1(f)), purchaseable items (sections 1(f), 5(w), 5(x)) which are available to purchase with a card or PayPal (Section 3).

The second-most egregious among these is of course the entirely anti-gamer terms that prevent consumers from receiving refunds for their purchases at all. So anyone who may have younger players purchasing these without the consent of their parents will be left pissing in the wind hoping for any recourse at all, which is almost certainly (in the opinion of this internet loudmouth) the reason why Gravity used a third-party company, and why the game is not available in the European Union, which has specific laws about refunds, reverse engineering and other things mentioned in the terms and conditions.

The most egregious of the terms and conditions is that players effectively give up their rights to be able to seek reasonable legal recourse if they feel they have been wronged by JoyMaker, which is basically in my opinion the legal equivalent of a boxing match where you ensure your opponent has both their hands tied behind their back.

ROPP of course stands with players in all countries and states clearly that players in all countries, not just the European Union, deserve the right to be able to receive refunds, and to be able to reverse engineer software should they choose to do so. The author of this article expresses his opinions strongly and suggests players on the service demand Gravity and JoyMaker remove pay-to-win from the game, and make a player-supported service based on a subscription, not another exploitative cash-grab.

Edit: 2 August 2025 - 12:50 GMT - Edited to make clear it is possible there will be no pay-to-win with paid items, but expressed that this does not seem likely given the track record of Gravity, in my opinion.

<vote />
<!--start text-->

Edit: 2 August 2025 - 12:50 GMT - Edited to make clear it is possible there will be no pay-to-win.
We get told all the time that the era of a monthly subscription is over, but we're told that by capitalists who want to maximise the amount of money they make in the short term, and we get told this is "reality". No, it's not. Why is it impossible to conceive of just making a service and making money over the long term, rather than making endless remakes which are insanely expensive to produce? Why not just make one service, Ragnarok 3, and make it as good as it can possibly be, alongside the community -- and develop it with us?

REGIONAL RESTRICTION: PLEASE NOTICE THAT COMPANY DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY GAME SERVICE TO USER(S) IN EUROPEAN UNION MEMBER STATES AND ICELAND, LIECHTENSTEIN, NORWAY, AND UNITED KINGDOM ("EUROPEAN USER").

This isn't "old-fashioned" it's just called - giving a shit about the games you make.
A trailer for a high-resolution remake of Ragnarok Online, Ragnarok Online 3 has appeared. I have to admit quite a few people will be intrigued, but the history of constant Pay-To-Win being injected into RO Mobile-Only games which are designed to milk money from an unfortunate few group of whales at everyone else's expense, has somewhat soured the experience.

Here's hoping that the experience is a pay to play, but has no P2W and can have the same longevity as the original Ragnarok Online. I'm sure I'm not alone in stating I don't wan't another P2W game that disappears after a year..
== Discussion ==
The topic of the Aegis Support Boards is something which brings up several issues around research on this wiki. Aegis Support Boards were always operating on the periphery of legality, and sometimes stepped out of that boundary in the way they redistributed property that belonged to Gravity and its partners or subsidiaries.

A value judgement on these issues -- to state whether they were ethical, or moral is not something this project wishes to do because it goes beyond the remit of preserving the history of the Ragnarok Game. Individual authors may decide to make that decision and have that right. The project avails itself of the right to document this history from a historical and sociological perspective. Some people may argue that by simply covering this subject, we have already tipped our hand, however, that is not the case.

Gravity itself has punished and will continue to sue and take action against people who it feels have encroached upon their Intellectual Property. Its interests are to protect its profits and its shareholders, and to that end, it holds various positions that private servers and the related community (what are called "public-domain ragnarok" in this project). However, because Gravity holds that position does not encompass all of the arguments or discussions that can be had on the topic -- a corporation's view of what it finds expedient is '''far from the entire picture'''.

The entire picture, including conflicting viewpoints, including disagreements and battles, is what we want to cover in this project, because that is truly operating a project which operates in the public interest. We do not want to simply be a stenographer for corporate power, and for this reason we cover these topics.

== On AEGIS binaries and ASB releases ==
It must be noted that the question of the legality of the binaries is very much up in the air and beyond the scope of this wiki -- particularly as we operate in a non-profit basis and base our research on publicly-available documents, and specifically do not accept materials which are expressly the copyrighted property of Gravity and its subsidiaries and partners.

While we think that the question of what AEGIS did and does is valid, and we do reference anonymous sources about AEGIS, we do not reproduce, distribute, or reference specific files or contents of AEGIS binaries or files, such as those which were distributed by the ASB among others as this would be fruit of the poisoned tree.

We do not want to, and will not, reference internal sourcecode or files within AEGIS specifically because we feel this is stepping over a line of preservation and non-profit Ragnarok stewardship, and into a legal gray area which we do not wish to, nor have the legal resources to dispute.

The '''Grand Tip Bag (also referred to as the “Grand Tip Bag Murder” or “Ragnarok Online murder case”)''' alleged murder is a story which derives from photos taken of a supposed newspaper clipping which detailed a murder committed by a Ragnarok Player over a "Grand Tip Bag", a mistranslation of "Golden Thief Bug", which the player allegedly murdered someone over. Based on the evidence that remains to this day and the supposed scans of the paper it is likely this is a myth due to inconsistencies in evidence, contradictory information about officials referenced in the article, and contradictory articles that currently exist detailing a murder that occurred but in a different manner to that detailed in the well-known picture.

== Text of the supposed article ==
SK Chair's Killing Ties To P1.5M Reward

Bacoor, Cavite - Ragnarok is his real life and he is the guild master. What he wanted was the Grand Tip Bag -- the game's cheat code, a computer card that will lead him to a series of online game victory. And he shots two people to death, in real life, simply for that GTB.

An 18-year-old student of Mapua Institute Of Technology (MIT) was arrested by Bacoor police authorities in Malate, Manila recently after the lone witness and survivor of a shootout that killed a Sangguniang Kabataan chairman and another youth identified him as the primary suspect.

Chief Inspector Rommel Marbil, Bacoor police chief, presented to Mayor Jessie Castillo on weekend the suspect identified as Conrad James B. Paraon, a second year Computer Engineering student at MIT and a scion of a prominent family in the province of Batangas.

Paraon is an aficionado player of Ragnarok, an on-line computer game by Level Up, and is known as a guild master in the virtual world of Ragnarok.

Police said, Paraon was arrested inside a computer show in Vito Cruz, Malate while playing Ragnarok.

"He didn't resist arrest, and he shows no sign of remorse knowing he was arresed for killing of two people in Bacoor," said Marbil who was perplexed by the suspect's reaction.

Marbil said that Paraon belongs to a team of on-line Ragnarok game players who joined and won the national competition last June 25 at the World Trade Center that gave out some P1.5 million cash prize.

GUILD MASTER ARRESTED. Ragnarok on-line game master Conrad James Paraon, in handcuff, faces Mayor Jessie Castillo (sitting) of Bacoor to whom he was presented by C/ Insp. Rommel Marbil (in uniform) after his arrest. Paraon was being tagged by police witnesses as the primary suspect in the killing of a SK chairman and another youth in Daang Bakal, Bacoor. (Photo by Tony Rocamora)

SK chair's killing ties to...
From Page 1

Marbil said the half million of the prize went to the St. Michael Institute in Bacoor who sponsored the team from Cavite, while the remaining P1 million, as agreed upon, was to be sub-divided equally.

Police record shows that on October 28, while playing computer games inside an internet station in Barangay Daang Bukid, 25 year old SK chairman Alvin Conception and friend Alger Bartolome was shot to death when four teenagers armed with 9mm pistol entered the said shop.

Michael Alejandro, 23, also friends of the two fatalities, luckily survived the shootout when the suspect left him wounded, thinking he was dead.

Alejandro positively identified Paraon who shot them inside the internet station.

Paraon denied his involvement on the killing and added, in his statement, that a certain Mark Sablan, also a Ragnarok player, was the one who carted the one million prizes.

Alejandro told police investigators however that it was Sablan that Paraon was after that night because it was Sablan who has kept the GTB cheat code that the suspect wanted.

Police charged Paraon with double murder in court. (By Tina Go-Timbang/Michael B. Silva)

== Is it real? ==
Looking at some of the information provided in the article, it appears plausible although some information provided conflicts with some sources -- the winnings for the 2005 event referenced in the article have been reported elsewhere as 1 million, but 1.5 million was the total of all prizes given. This conflicts with the article which states 1.5 million was the prize split between participants in the given guild.

There is a related news article in the Phillipine Star which was written by a Cristina Timbang on October 9, 2005, a name which is similar to that provided in the above article, "Tina Go-Timbang". The article actually published in the Phillipine Star (PhilStar) stated<ref name=":0">Person (no date) ''3 Patay SA Karahasan sa Cavite'', ''Philstar.com''. Available at: https://archive.is/TaDFx (Accessed: 10 March 2024).</ref>:
CAVITE – Three men including an SK chairman were confirmed dead after the victims were shot in separate violence in the town of Tanza and Bacoor, Cavite last night.

Among the murdered victims were Arvin Concepcion, SK chairman, Alger Bartolome, 25, fellow resident of Barangay Daang Bukid, Bacoor, Cavite; and Cesar Buates, 48, barangay volunteer and living in Sta. Cecilia Subd. in Barangay Mulawin, Tanza, Cavite.

Based on the police report, the victims, Concepcion and Bartolome, were shot by four unknown men while the victims were playing computer games in the area covered by Barangay Daang Bukid.

Meanwhile, Michael Alejandro, 23, of Fisherman Village in Barangay Poblacion was critically injured.

For an inexplicable reason, no one recognized the suspects who fled in an unknown direction and it is believed that a frat war was one of the motives of the crime.

Following this, another barangay volunteer was shot dead by an unknown man, while the victim was sleeping in the barangay outpost in Barangay Mulawin, Tanza, Cavite.

The victim, Buates, did not wake up after being wounded around 5 am, according to the police report. (Cristina Weight)
This indicates that a person named Arvin Conception who was a "SK Chairman" (Sangguniang Kabataan -- the Phillipine youth assembly), along with Alger Bartolome (also mentioned in the article image), Cesar Buates (not mentioned), and Michael Alejandro (also mentioned). However, the article above states the people were suspected of murdering another person sleeping in an outpost<ref name=":0" />, which is not included in the other article.

=== Uncertainties and discrepancies in the article ===
The most likely pointers to the fact this is a hoax stem from the fact that the location, date and time, as well as the newspaper name are excluded from the article's image.

The article in the image is alleged to be written by an author named "Tina Go-Timbang", who did write for the Phillipine Star (PhilStar) but from 2013 onwards, not from 2005 when this incident likely occurred. The paper shows records online of articles from as early as 2002.

The article states that at the time Rommel Marbil was Chief Inspector, however, public records of his career history do not show him occupying this post-- he was Officer-In-Charge for a financial department of the police, then director for PNP regional office, and Police Superintendent, not chief inspector (PC/INSP). It's possible however, he could have occupied this position as he is currently in a higher rank and may have passed through it.

The photograph taken by "Tony Rocamora" could refer to Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Ramon Antonio Vicente Rocamora, however, he is the prosecutor for ''Bacong'' rather than ''Bacoor'' where this is incident occurred so it is unlikely. There is no record of a photographer with the name "Tony Rocamora" in search results as of 2024 -- it is also possible this information could have decayed, or been removed since 2005.

An industry site refers to the event referenced in the article in the image and also references the alleged culprit's Ragnarok Online team, Team Hatred<ref name=":1">''Team hatred claims RPC 2005 championship!'' (no date) ''GameIndustry.ph''. Available at: https://archive.is/wip/icaok (Accessed: 10 March 2024).</ref>, stating:
Team Hatred is composed of Conrad James Faraon, 18; John Madlangbayan, 19; Carlo Templora, 22; Melvin Yee, 19; Mel John Toan, 20; Zyrus Lunas, 19; Andrew Justin, 22; Jhun Richie Chua, 19; and Emmanuel Tanyao, 19.
This article however, contradicts the claim in the image which states the referenced prize money was 1.5 million, however the article, as well as a video of Ragnarok Phillipine Championship event shows the prize money as 1 million<ref name=":1" /> and also references that the sponsor of the team was Collegian Internet Café, not St. Michael Institute, which is a school located in Bacoor.

The alleged murderer is also on Facebook, registering an account in 2010 and seemingly working since, which would be unlikely if the case occurred in 2005 since the Phillipines has a minimum of 20 years for murder, which would indicate such a prison sentence to run at minimum 20 to 40 years. The guild, Team Hatred, has no posting on its Facebook page of any reference to any such past, although absence of evidence does not indicate positive confirmation no such thing occurred.

'''Ragnarok Online''' is a game created by Gravity Interactive released on the Personal Computer (PC) platform which is loosely based upon the Ragnarok comic, or Manhwa called [[Ragnarok (Manhwa)|Ragnarok]] which outlines elements which were used in the game. It was originally released in 2001 with a public alpha, and later with two beta releases in April and May of 2001. Due to its success, its scope expanded quickly into a paid service, operating beyond Korea into a Japanese server and an international server based in the United States, as well as other regional variants based in Europe, India and Oceania which were run by a licensing model with third parties.

Various discontents around actions taken by companies running Ragnarok Online servers, as well as general curiosity, led to the foundation of a long-lived and storied community of reverse engineers who managed to reverse engineer the game and create [[Ragnarok Server Emulators|Server Emulators]] which mimicked the official service Gravity, and those who then used these server emulators to create their own versions of Ragnarok Online known as [[Private Server (Ragnarok Online)|Private Servers]] which provided a publicly accessible, almost universally free-to-play and community-supported versions of the game which ostensibly used Gravity's own game client.

== Story ==
The story of the game is told via a patchwork of dialogue provided by in-game [[NPCs (Ragnarok Online)|NPCs]], which is loosely based upon the Norse mythology, and uses many references to the names of places and people referenced in Norse Mythology. The game's plot is more accurately based on the Manhwa named [[Ragnarök (Manhwa)|Ragnarök]] by Korean manhwa artist and author Lee Myung-jin.

==== Game story ====
In the Ragnarok Online Alpha, Gravity defined the underlying story for Ragnarok Online as<ref>Gravity Corp (2001). ''Ragnarok Online - English - Story - Background Creation''. [online] Available at: <nowiki>https://web.archive.org/web/20010802104851fw_/http://www.ragnarokonline.com/english/info_1.htm</nowiki> [Accessed 23 Jul. 2024].</ref> (paraphrased with improved English):
After a long period of holy war between Gods, Humans and Demons..

As this war began to take its deadly toll on the Gods, Humans and Demons, an uneasy truce was arrived at, creating an uneasy peace for a thousand years. After many years of peace, Human beings forgot the miserable past and wounds of the war, became complacent and selfish, not learning or growing from the faults of the distant past.

Bizarre occurrences began to break the peace in Midgard, the land of the humans. Wild animals began to become aggressive and attacked humans. Earthquakes and tidal waves hit Midgard unlike ever before, and out of this chaos came reports of a terrifying roaring sound, and mysterious gods and demons.

Rumors also swelled about the story of the pieces of Ymir, a defender of the peace, sparking intense curiosity in the adventurers of Midgard hoping to find some way to restore the peace they once took for granted. These adventurers now start out on a path to find these pieces, as well as fame and fortune, not knowing the true depth of what is happening..

==== Underpinnings in Norse Mythology ====
More specifically, it references the mythology as laid out in the ''Elder (Poetic) Edda,'' a collection of Old Norse poems which outline the mythology of the Norse gods and humans. In the mythological poems about the gods in the Elder Edda, the creation of the world is outlined in several different poems: the ''Völuspá'' and ''Vafthrúdnismál,'' both of which give contradicting accounts. <ref name=":0">The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica (2019). Encyclopedia Britannica, 27 May. 2024, <nowiki>https://www.britannica.com/topic/Loki</nowiki>. Accessed 23 July 2024.</ref>

In the ''Völuspá,'' the world was began by Odin and his brothers, Vili and Vé, who raised the earth up from a sea into the sky, the sun shone on the barren rocks of the earth, and became replete with green herbage. Odin later along with two other gods come upon two tree trunks named Askr and Embla, who they endow with breath, reason, hair and countenance (facial expression) and create the first human opposite-sex couple. There also exist a type of being known as jötunn which have previously been problematically translated as "giant", but are a type of being with powers akin to a god, but which do not reside in Asgard, the dwelling of the gods. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

In the ''Vafthrúdnismál'', a cow named Audhumla existed, which formed from her udders as she licked the frost from salty stones, and the milk that flowed from her udders created four rivers of milk. The cow also licked the stones into the shape of a man, which became known as Búri, the grandfather of Odin and his brothers. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

From the rivers created by Audhumla, spurted venom-cold drops called Élivágar which then created a primal giant named Aurgelmir, who was also known as Ymir. As he grew, eventually one of the giant's legs grew into a six-headed male son, and the other leg and under his arms grew a maid (a girl). Ymir is then later killed by Odin and his brothers, Vili and Vé, the descendants of Búri to make the world of Midgard, the home of humans. Ymir's bones are turned into the rocks, his skull the sky, his teeth the cliffs, his hair the trees, and his brains which were blown over the earth (presumably like seeds) to become clouds. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

The ''Völuspá'' also explains that there was an ash tree seed, known as Yggdrasil which when it grew, its roots connected the nine worlds. Under one of its roots lay Niflheim, the cold and icy world of the dead ruled over by the goddess Hel, which was supposedly the last of the 9 worlds into which evil men passed (also interestingly a carry-over from Germanic/Norse mythology to the concept of "hell" in Christian Mythology). Situated half-way between Niflheim is Midgard, and then Muspelheim to the south, the world of fire, guarded by Surtr, the fire giant. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

The human realm, Midgard, is also joined to Asgard via a rainbow bridge known as Bifrost. Asgard is the dwelling of the gods and also the home of Valhalla where Odin dwelled along with the heroes slain in the realm of earthly battle, and Thrudheim, the realm of Thor. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

It is also important to note that, among the gods, the god Loki and female jötunn and giantess Angrboð bear three children: the wolf Fenrir, the Midgard serpent Jörmungandr, and the ruler of the world of Niflheim, Hel, but were left in the land Jötunheimr to be raised. Later this was discovered by the gods, who dispatched Odin to deal with them. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

Odin later threw Hel into Niflheim, Jörmungandr into Midgard/earth's deep sea. The god Týr was the only one with the courage to approach Fenrir and feed him. Fenrir grew rapidly and had restrictions (fetters) placed upon him to limit his power and strength, which he eventually outgrew and broke, becoming more and more wild, and eventually biting off Týr's right hand. Fenrir was later bound by the gods and pulled his mouth wide, trying to bite the gods, and its jaws were split apart by a sword, with Fenrir lying there until the events of Ragnarök.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

==== Ragnarök in Norse mythology ====
The term Ragnarök refers to a series of events (essentially a war) described in the Elder (poetic) Edda's poems and a great battle, in which several of the Norse gods (including the gods Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdall, and Loki) are killed and the world is burned, and then submerged in water, later to rise again, cleansed and fertile, with the surviving gods meeting once again, and the world being repopulated anew by the remaining survivors Líf and Lífþrasir.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

The ''Völuspá'' explains that the extent of the strife in the human world, Midgard also entails brothers and sisters fighting each-other, an age of swords and axes will prevail, and eventually shields would be riven in strife. Also among this tale of strife the huge sea serpent which encircles the earth (Midgard), an ouroboros, begins to thrash around in the sea as it releases its tail from its mouth and causes waves to crash upon the land of earth. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

Surtr, the guardian of Muspelheim begins to march from the south towards Midgard with his sword burning brighter than the sun. Fenrir, the monstrous wolf seeks revenge, and his sons swallow the sun and the moon, causing natural disasters on earth and freeing Fenrir, now breathing fire from mouth and nose, and rides to the battlefield (presumably in Midgard) to meet surtr and his sibling Jörmungandr, the giant sea serpent. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />

The sea serpent Jörmungandr opens its mouth as it roars into battle, as well as Fenrir. Jörmungandr is met by Thor, Odin's son and also defender of earth. Thor battles the serpent and defeats it, but is killed as he walks away from the battle, infected with Jörmungandr's poison. Odin squares off against Fenrir, but is eventually swallowed whole and is killed, before Fenrir is then killed by Odin's son Víðarr who rips him apart by the jaw. The final battle between Freyr and Surtr results in Freyr being killed and the world being swallowed in flames, the earth sinks into the sea, stars vanish as the steam rises, ready for the cycle to begin again. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /><ref name=":3" />
In a welcome development, the Brazilian version of Ragnarok: The Orchestra Concert has released a full version of the concert on YouTube. The high interest in the concerts seems to have finally led to us unlucky people outside of the Ragnarok strongholds of Brazil, Thailand, Japan and the Phillipines being able to watch one from start to finish. What a treat.
Balancing this has been difficult with the small resources we have had, due to the fact that we don't want to blanket ban areas like Russia from visiting the site, but we also don't want to open up signup because then so much junk would end up getting posted which would take up most of our resources to remove to get rid of it.
