Lutie is the name of a city in the Schwarzwald Republic, in which Christmas is celebrated every day[1]. It is also home to the dungeon and map "Toy Factory". The player can access Lutie by talking to an NPC called "Santa", which also resembles the modern Santa Claus in the city of Al De Baran.

Backstory

Originally the town existed without any major industry due to the fact it had a very cold climate, and due to its geographical location which made it a very inaccessible location for deliveries to be made. It was somewhat of a backwater in the republic until the establishment of the Toy Factory, which manufactured toys, confectionary and drinks -- particularly "Anniversary Cookies" and "Present Boxes" for all of Midgard.[2]

These products became famous within Midgard, causing many tourists to descend upon the town, and leading to a boom of the factory and the town. Eventually, the Toy Factory began to decline until its founder suddenly died from unknown causes, causing the factory to become abandoned and eventually become inhabited by monsters.[2] It was rumoured that the founder was killed after creating a super-powerful millionth "last doll" which subsequently gained human-like emotions and killed its creator, the owner of the factory. [2]

Game History

"Christmas Prison" -- an early version of the map with a fenced-off area.

Lutie was originally implemented into Ragnarok Online in Korea on December 17, 2002 and Japan on December 19, 2002. [3]

The original version of the Lutie map had a fenced-off area in its design which Acolytes were able to warp to using the Warp skill. Some Acolytes created a Memo so they were able to create a Warp Portal and then trap unsuspecting players within the fenced off area. For those which lacked butterfly wings or other means of escaping, some Acolytes also charged extortionate prices within the area for these items. The issue was eventually resolved and the fenced-off area was removed. [4]

On 18 February 2014, on Japanese Ragnarok Online, the event "Toy Factory In Nightmare" expanded the Toy Dungeon, with a storyteller called "Catherine Zeta" (named after Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones) explaining the backstory of Toy Dungeon.[2]
