ROPP Policy: Account Security
ROPP's Policy on Account Security is fairly straightforward. For new accounts, we insist that you have a password that is at least 32 characters long. This is for both our benefit, as a larger password is generally statistically less likely that your password will be guessed.
Password managers
For members of staff, the level of security is higher -- accounts must be created with 256 characters. And you thought 32 characters was bad! This seems a bit crazy? This is designed to incentivise you to use a password manager so that you can manage your passwords more securely. We recommend against using browser-based systems like LastPass, and instead recommend a standalone one such as KeePass, KeepassX or KeePassXC. For more information, see the video below:
Once you're using a password manager, this can prevent you from reusing passwords and other related problems.
